What does an average day in the life look like for you?

As I am a PhD student, I don’t really have a ‘typical’ day. Some days I am in the office running statistics for 10 hours straight, some days I am having meetings with my new honours student, some days I am teaching undergraduate courses, and some days I am writing chapters from a café. Every day is different, but almost every day is busy.

What is your PhD about?

My PhD is in conservation psychology, which is a research area that applies psychological theories and principles to conservation issues. Specifically, I look at how perception of risk, fear, and attitudes can be influenced by the media- and I focus on sharks!

What is your side hustle?

My side hustle is my blog and Instagram, dr.ofwhat, which I started three years ago. Drofwhat shares my PhD/thesis journey, provides study tips, shows my adventures, and highlights other PhD student’s typical days.

How much did it cost you to get started?

Starting a blog is actually really cheap (or free for many people). I pay for my domain on WordPress (about $120 per year), but there are free options.

Note from Melanie: Check out my blog post on why you need a website for your side hustle where I answer other common questions people have about starting a website. Also how to create a personal academic website where I outline how to get your website started.

What are you hoping to do when you finish your PhD?

I am currently unsure exactly what I want to do, but I know that I would love to get out of academia for a while. I really love research, so I am hoping to work in market research or data visualization.  I would also love to keep supervising students in conservation psychology honours! It is a bit stressful not knowing exactly where I will be next year, but also exciting!
